Please inform what type of security protocol is used in getVPN. Is any of those PPP, PPTP, L2F, L2TP, IP Security (IPSec), SSTP and OpenVPN? I am doing a research for school.

It's not specified about the connection method you have specified above, but from what I've seen when I installed the product, it appears the software is built around openVPN. You don't have access to the configuration files or certificates because they're bundled within application.
I am using Windows 8.1 and I am not able to get GetPrivate to connect to the VPN server. Any ideas?

Try to obtain a new version of the application and make sure that the other LAN/WiFi adapter is properly enabled else the VPN will not work correctly. Additionally, the Internet connection needs to be active at all times.
